Stonefalls Wayshrines

The Elder Scrolls Online

What Is A Wayshrine?

Wayshrines are ancient, mystical structures that serve as vital navigational and survival tools across the sprawling world of Tamriel. These stone altars, often adorned with intricate arcane runes or weathered by time, are scattered throughout the game’s diverse landscapes, from lush forests to desolate wastelands. They act as fast-travel hubs, allowing players to instantly teleport between any discovered wayshrines at no gold cost, provided they initiate the travel while standing at one of these sacred sites.

When teleporting to a wayshrine from a non-wayshrine location, such as an open field, dungeon, or city street, players incur a small gold fee, the amount of which depends on their character level and a temporary recall cooldown that can significantly increase the cost for frequent teleports within a short period, typically lasting 5 to 15 minutes. This cooldown mechanic encourages strategic use of wayshrines to minimize expenses, such as traveling to a nearby wayshrine first to enable free teleportation.

Beyond fast travel, wayshrines serve as critical resurrection points, allowing players who die in combat to revive at the nearest wayshrine at no cost or to resurrect at their current location by consuming a soul gem. Visually, wayshrines are designed to harmonize with their surroundings, appearing rugged and overgrown in remote wilderness areas or more polished and ceremonial near bustling settlements, reflecting their deep ties to Tamriel’s lore as sacred sites connected to the Divines or ancient magical forces. Their distinct icon on the in-game map makes them easy to locate once discovered, incentivizing exploration to unlock their full potential.

Wayshrines enhance gameplay efficiency by reducing travel time across Tamriel’s vast regions, providing a safety net in dangerous areas, and encouraging players to explore every corner of the world to uncover these invaluable landmarks. Their strategic placement near key quest hubs, cities, or remote outposts ensures they remain integral to progression, whether for completing quests, joining group activities, or recovering from perilous encounters. By integrating practical functionality with immersive lore, wayshrines enrich the exploration and adventuring experience in ESO, making them a cornerstone of the game’s open-world design.

On your map, wayshrines will appear with a blackened wayshrine icon when you are close to its location.  Once the wayshrine has been visited, the icon turns white.
