Malice – Two Handed ESO Nightblade Tank Build

Malice answers a question most people don’t even bother asking. Is it actually possible to tank properly in The Elder Scrolls Online without Sword and Shield or an Ice Staff? And can you do it without feeling like you’re missing half the tools a tank needs?

This build exists because the usual problems with non-traditional tank weapons have been deliberately solved. Block mitigation, block cost, sustain, and taunt control are all covered in ways that actually make sense for a Two Handed setup.

Two Handed Tanking & Taunt Control

Malice uses a Two Handed weapon not just to tank, but to control enemies directly. With the Tormentor set, charge and pull abilities apply a taunt to the individual target hit.

This is important, because Tormentor no longer taunts every enemy hit by an AoE. Instead, it gives you something far more valuable. Both Stampede and Silver Leash become fully controllable, repeatable taunts.

Silver Leash in particular benefits heavily from this. Instead of being limited by taunt rules, it can overwrite existing taunts reliably. That turns your chain into a true control tool, not just a positioning button.

Solving Block Mitigation & Cost

Sword and Shield and Ice Staff both provide built-in block mitigation bonuses. Two Handed does not. To compensate for that, Malice uses the Bracing Anchor Champion Point, restoring the missing block mitigation that tanks rely on.

This matters more than raw health. Certain mechanics in the game are designed to one-shot tanks that lack proper block mitigation, regardless of how large their health pool is.

Sustain is handled just as deliberately. Block cost reduction glyphs are stacked, and Vicious Ophidian reduces stamina costs even further. Skills are cheaper, blocking is cheaper, and resource drain is kept under control.

Resource Flow in Real Fights

Vicious Ophidian also restores stamina when enemies you have damaged are killed. Stampede’s ongoing damage makes this easy to trigger, even while blocking.

In large pulls, this creates a steady stream of stamina return as enemies die around you. As long as the group is doing its job, you can maintain pressure and block uptime far more comfortably than you’d expect.

In single-target fights, the build feels familiar. Strong mitigation, manageable costs, and enough breathing room to heavy attack between mechanics when possible.

Added Utility & Survivability

Recent updates added another layer of value. Direct damage from charge and pull abilities now heals based on the damage dealt from the Tormentor set. Charging into a group doesn’t just apply taunts, it also provides a meaningful self-heal on impact.

On top of that, the build includes a Restoration Staff and key healing and buff skills, offering extra sustain, survivability, and movement speed for the group when needed.

  • Reliable taunt control through Stampede and Silver Leash
  • Block mitigation restored without Sword and Shield
  • Reduced block and skill costs for stable sustain
  • Stamina return tied to group kills in large pulls
  • Healing on impact from charges and pulls
  • Additional healing, buffs, and speed support

Malice is not a traditional tank, and it will take a little time to get comfortable with it. Once it clicks, though, it becomes a flexible, aggressive, and genuinely enjoyable way to tank both large pulls and single-target encounters.

It protects the group, keeps enemies under control, and does it without forcing you into the usual tank mold.

Class Mastery

Update 50 has given us a new system called Class Mastery in The Elder Scrolls Online. If you decide to remain 100% pure class, you gain access to five unique Class Mastery passives, but can only choose two. These are the two selected for this build.

Cutthroat's Focus - Cutthroat's Focus
Nocturnal Inspiration - Nocturnal Inspiration
Important:
In encounters with temporary immunity phases (gold health bars), replace Silver Leash with Inner Beast to maintain a dedicated manual taunt. Tormentor requires direct damage to apply taunt, which will not trigger during immunity phases.

🏆 Champion Points – Malice Nightblade Tank Setup

Champion Points for Malice are built around one thing: never losing control. This setup reinforces tank fundamentals by increasing mitigation, reducing incoming damage, improving recovery, and ensuring mistakes never result in a sudden death or lost taunt.

Champion Points are divided into three constellations: Warfare (Blue), Craft (Green), and Fitness (Red). For Malice, these choices focus on damage reduction, healing received, sustain, and block efficiency.

ESO Blue Champion Points
  • Unassailable
  • Duelist’s Rebuff
  • Swift Renewal
  • Ironclad
ESO Green Champion Points
  • Liquid Efficiency
  • Rationer
  • Treasure Hunter
  • Steed’s Blessing
ESO Red Champion Points
  • Boundless Vitality
  • Rejuvenation
  • Fortified
  • Bracing Anchor

These Champion Points ensure Malice remains stable under pressure: reduced incoming damage, stronger healing, safer block uptime, and consistent sustain even in extended fights.

How To Play Malice

Malice is a control-focused Pureclass Nightblade tank built around debuffs, sustain tricks, and absolute consistency. This is not about fancy rotations — it’s about never letting your defenses or taunts drop.

Non-Negotiables (Read This)

  • Maintain your resistance buff at all times. This is crucial for any tank. If it drops, you are fragile.
  • Maintain taunt at all times. Never let it run out.
  • Taunts last 15 seconds — reapply every 11–12 seconds. Waiting the full duration is a mistake. Mechanics, movement, and latency exist.

If a boss drops taunt, someone is getting flattened. No excuses.

Engage, Pull & Positioning

Your back bar heals should be on the ground at all times — for you, for the group, and for the recovery bonuses they provide.

  • Use Stampede to get into fights quickly and tag targets.
  • Pull enemies in with Silver Leash and taunt others immediately.
  • On this build, Silver Leash is a legitimate taunt thanks to your gear — use it confidently.

If the group kills enemies you’ve damaged, you gain stamina back per kill. Stampede helps tag everything so those refunds keep rolling.

Sustain & Pressure Management

Two-Handed skills are expensive, so you have two real sustain options:

  • Heavy attack — and tell your group to kill faster.
  • Spam Leeching Strikes, even while blocking.

Leeching Strikes costs health, but rapidly refills your resource bars. As long as your health is stable, you can sustain like this for a long time under pressure.

Debuffs = Survival

Don’t forget why this build works. You weaken enemies constantly:

  • Caltrops – AoE Major Breach.
  • Power Extraction – AoE damage debuff.
  • Mass Hysteria – Crowd control and damage reduction.

Weak enemies mean a smooth run. Rack ’em up, stack ’em tight, and the dungeon becomes easy mode.

Attributes, Race, and Mundus Stone

This section covers the core stat setup for Malice, built around high mitigation, sustain, and reliability under constant pressure.

✔️ We are using the Atronach Mundus Stone, as explained in the video, to support long-term Magicka sustain.

✔️ All 64 Attribute Points are placed into Health.

✔️ The chosen race is Imperial. Other races are perfectly viable, but differences come only from minor passive bonuses, as explained in the video.

Potions & Food

If you want to use potions, you should be running Tri-Potions at all times. These restore all three resources and grant Major recovery buffs for their full duration. Do not let your potion uptime drop — maintaining these buffs is vital to your sustain. Don’t be cheap. Use your potions.

🍲 Flat Food (Max Health + Max Stamina)

Use the highest-level food available that provides Max Health and Max Stamina only. All options below provide identical stats — choose whichever is easiest to maintain.
